Multiple Teams · Girls Basketball beats Eastern

The Lady Panthers traveled to Greentown Friday night to face the Eastern Comets in a cross county rival game. Both teams came out slow, and traded baskets most of the first quarter. At the end of 1, the Panthers trailed 10-11. In the second, the Western picked up the pressure defense, getting steals and easy transition baskets from Sarah Connolly and Clair Lechner. But, a 6-2 run late in the quarter by the Comets had Western down 25-26 at the half. The 3rd quarter was a different story as Western put the full court pressure on and forced steal after steal and layup after layup. Campbell and Lechner lead the way with 6pt each in the period, and the Panthers stretched the lead to 8pts heading into the fourth. In the final period, foul trouble was huge for both teams, with 5 players fouling out of the game. Western kept pushing the pace, and getting to the foul line (24/38) on the evening. In the end the Panthers speed and pressure was just too much for the Comets as the Panthers went on to the first victory of the season 65-51. Clair Lechner led four panthers in double digits with 20pts, Connolly 15, Campbell 11, Penning 10. Lechner netted a triple double on the night with 12 rebounds and 10 steals to lead the Lady Panthers. Western takes on Northfield in the home opener Tuesday, McCutcheon on Thursday, and Frankfort on Saturday in a packed week of basketball
