The Western Lady Panthers took on Northfield Norsemen last night in the home opener. The Panthers jumped out to an early 12-0 lead, behind buckets from Penning, Lechner, and Sanders to open the game. Western pushed their lead to 16-4 to end the first behind pressure defense and great team effort. The second quarter saw Northfield fight back into the game, taking advantage of Panther turnovers and errant shots but Western had an 8 point halftime lead at 25-17. The shooting went cold for the Panthers in the third, only scoring 4 points, and seeing the lead slip to 29-28. The game went back and forth in the final period, and the Panthers found themselves down 3 with under a minute to go. After a timeout Sarah Connolly hit a quick 3 pointer to tie the game with 33 seconds left. Northfield with the ball, and the clock under :30, the Panthers defense got another stop. After using their last timeout, the Panthers got a good look and Connolly gets fouled. With 13 secs left Connolly steps up and knocks down both free throws to give the lead back to the Panthers. A fews second of lock down defense later and Western escapes with the victory 38-36, improving to 2-1 on the season.
