LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2018 SEASON
Western High School has a rich football tradition and our expectations for the 2018 season are extremely high. A majority of our players have bought into our off-season strength program and are achieving awesome results, as we continue to work and prepare for the season I am extremely excited to see that hard work pay off for our players in the fall. While our players have put in a lot of time and work this off-season, our work is far from done. Our summer phase of our off-season program is the most important phase and it is vital that each player buy in and do their part to help our football program reach our championship goals. The investment of hard work in the summer will pay huge dividends in the fall.
SCHEDULE FOR 2018
We open our season on the road against Twin Lakes, then we return home to play Lafayette Jeff, we will travel to Rensselaer, then play at home against Benton Central, travel to Tipton, travel to Lewis Cass, play at home against Northwestern in the “BATTLE OF THE BELL”, play Hamilton Heights at home, and we will host the Hoosier Conference Playoff in our last regular season game.
We will compete in Class 4A Sectional 21 once again. Sectional opponents include: Mississinewa, Delta, Marion, Yorktown, Pendleton Heights, Frankfort, and Lebanon. Mississinewa is the defending sectional champion.
SUMMER WEIGHTS & CONDITIONING
Our summer weights and conditioning program is critical to our success during the season. All players are expected to attend. We will meet 4 days per week from 8-10 am for weights & conditioning. On Thursday mornings during June we will have position drills and installs from 7-8 am before weights. We will be training with the basketball team this summer for our weights and conditioning, we will have a lot of people in the weight room at one time so it is important to be on time and ready to start at 8 am. It would be a good idea to bring something to eat right after lifting to refuel your body. Our first day of Summer Weights will be Tuesday, May 29th and we will lift Tuesday-Friday that week.
TEAM CAMP & MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY CAMP
We will host our team camp at Western High School once again this year. TEAM CAMP WEEKS ARE THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT WEEKS OF THE SUMMER!!! During team camp we will install our offensive and defensive systems, practice important drills, and we will have scrimmages against other schools. Our first week of Team Camp is July 9th-12th and the second week of Team Camp is July 16th-20th. During Team Camp we will lift from 3-4, then transition to the field where we will practice in helmet & shoulder pads from 4:30-6:30 pm. We will attend Manchester University for their 7 on 7 and OL/DL Camp on Saturday July 14th, this will be at no cost to the players it will be paid for by the football program.
SUMMER SCRIMMAGES & 7 ON 7
The IHSAA allows schools to schedule a limited number of competitions so we have scheduled two 7 on 7s and two scrimmages. On June 16th we will travel to Center Grove High School to compete in their annual 7 on 7 tournament and OL/DL challenge and on July 14th we will travel to Manchester University for their 7 on 7 camp and OL/DL camp. At the end of our first week of Team Camp on July 12th we will travel to Hamilton Southeastern for a scrimmage, at the end of our second week of Team Camp on July 20th we will travel to 2016 State Runner-Up Eastbrook for a scrimmage. As you can see we have beefed up our summer competition schedule in order to better prepare us for our regular season and sectional opponents. Summer scrimmages and 7 on 7s are a fun opportunity for players to compete and showcase their abilities.
July 30th-August 3rd will be our 2-A-DAY practices. During this week players will come in the morning (8—11 am) to lift/run/meet/walk-thru, and return in the afternoon (3:30-6 pm) to practice. Beginning July 30th players are required to attend all practices and football activities. If you miss any practice or activity without contacting a coach it is considered an unexcused absence.
PRACTICE ROUTINE ONCE SCHOOL BEGINS
Once the season begins we will practice after school until 5:30 Monday-Thursday, and have film on Saturday morning at 8 am. Junior Varsity will usually play on Monday nights, with an occasional Saturday morning game. Thursday after practice we will have a team dinner in the cafeteria. Friday nights are varsity games, all members of the high school football program will dress/travel for varsity games.
LABOR DAY & FALL BREAK
We will practice Labor Day, September 3rd from 6-8 PM (VARSITY ONLY). Fall Break will take place October 15-19, which is our first week of the Sectional Tournament. During fall break our JV will play their final game on Monday; however JV players are expected to continue to attend practice and games until the varsity season is finished.
